2014 Maslak: What is the Çeperde Archi-Walk?
Design Biennial Walks consist of 12 different regions specified on both sides of Istanbul.
Current urbanization of Istanbul is a distopic mixture of capital-oriented opportunist that randomly build sites of the last 100 years. The effects of this on the urban landscape is rather dramatic. This situation can be seen very clearly, for example: in Maslak there are business centers overlooking Belgrade Forest and the Bosphorus. These beautiful areas should have been zoned for living areas in order to improve the art of living well. In this construction mix, there is a university campus, high school campuses, lots of high office buildings, residence complexes, automobile service stations, horse riding centers, shopping malls, performance centers, shanty houses and a military post. All these places in Maslak have not been zone for ordinary traffic. This brings the quality of life down because of the congested traffic at all times of the day.
As an urban region Maslak experience constitutes an opportunity to understand the 21st century distopic urbanization at first hand. Via a psychographic walk, 'dérive'; a walking is actualized by the designer Ali Bakova and architectural theoretician/commentator Gökhan Karakuş with the participants with a route titled “2014 Maslak: Çeperde Archi-Walk” within the scope of 2nd Istanbul Design Biennial within the Maslak reality of today. The spectators who bought tickets for the route, have participated in the walking on December 6thwith their tickets.
As a part of this walk; symbolic nature of design, architectural and urbanization has contributed deeply regarding to the personal and social dynamics of the landscaping experience of Istanbul.
